James had splendid amateur career when he won the English Amateur at the age of 20 in 1974 and reached the final of the British Amateur, but was beaten 8 & 7 by Vinny Giles. He played in the 1975 Walker Cup matches when he won 3 of Great Britain's 8 and a half points. He then turned professional and in his rookie year finished 15th on the Order of Merit, to win Rookie-of-the-Year honors in 1976. James, who is a keen gardener has had a very successful career, never finishing higher than 32nd on the Order of Merit, despite being regarded as a poor putter. James is a long-serving Tournament Committee member and was chairman in 1994. He was also one time a member of the PGA European Tour's board of directors. Member 1977, '79, '81, '89, '91, '93 & '95 European Ryder Cup Team, will be the team captain in 1999. . . Resumed his golf career at the Volvo PGA Championship in May 2001 following a successful battle with cancer. After being diagnosed with testicular cancer, he underwent chemotherapy and surgery before he was able to make his comeback. Stood down as Chairman of The European Tour's Tournament Committee at the end of 2003. Captain of Europe's Ryder Cup Team at The Country Club, Brookline, in 1999. Used the experience gained there to act as a valuable member of Sam Torrance's backroom team as Europe regained the trophy at The Belfry... The last couple of years, has helped as part of the BBC's commentary team at the event. |
