In his youth, Floyd wavered between a career in baseball or golf, and a victory at the 1960 National Jaycees tournament tipped the scales toward golf, though he maintains his ties to baseball, particularly the Chicago Cubs. Floyd was rookie of the Year on tour in 1963, recording a win at the St. Petersburg Open. Floyd won 22 times in more than three decades on the PGA Tour, including four major championships (1969 and '82 PGA, 1976 Masters and 1986 U.S. Open), the 1982 Memorial Tournament and the 1981 Tournament Players Championship, where he defeated Curtis Strange in a playoff. Floyd's last victory on the PGA Tour was the 1992 Doral Ryder Open, winning at age 49 two weeks after losing his home to a fire. One of the greatest disappointments of his career was the 1990 Masters, which he lost in a playoff to Nick Faldo after hitting his approach into the water at the 11th hole on the second extra hole. . . Winner, 1983 Vardon Trophy. . . Competed on seven Ryder Cup Teams(1969, '75, '77, '81, '83, '85 and '91) Floyd also was the Captain of the 1989 Ryder Cup Team. . .
