Player Notes

Mason became the most successful rookie in European Seniors Tour history when he secured the 2003 Order of Merit title just four months after turning 50. The Englishman won four times and finished second twice to secure the John Jacobs Trophy after just 11 starts, setting a new money record of ?350,242. He also became the fastest player to secure four victories (11 starts), only the second player after Tommy Horton to win in three consecutive starts and the only other senior professional after Horton to capture four titles in one season. . . .Mason accumulated more money on his way to becoming the PING Rookie of the Year than he did during his most successful season on The European Tour when he won twice and earned ?339,210 in 1994. It took 'Mace'almost 20 years to win for the first time on The European Tour, at the 1994 Turespa?a Masters Open de Andalucia, but a mere two starts to duplicate that feat on the Seniors Tour. He also finished second at the Senior British Open, presented by MasterCard, losing out to Tom Watson in a play-off before ending the season in style, winning three times in succession. A regular competitor on The European Tour between 1974 and 1997, finishing in the top 40 on the Order of Merit on no less than 13 occasions. During that time, he registered 62 top ten finishes, including a tie for fourth place behind Tom Watson at the 1980 Open Golf Championship at Muirfield. He also won three times on the Safari Tour. Leading up to his 50th birthday, he spent two years working as a referee on the Seniors Tour.
