David J. Russell
DJ'as he is much better known, is one of the most popular figures in European golf. A former English Boy and Youth international, he won his first European Tour title, the Car Care Plan International, in 1985 but was then dogged by a series of ill-luck. In 1987 he tore ankle ligaments and then suffered for four years with energy sapping ME (myalgic encephalomyelitis). He lost his Tour card in 1989 but won it back despite breaking a toe the day he flew out to the European Tour Qualifying School Finals. In 1992, DJ put in a stellar performance at the Open de Lyon Troph?e V33 when he romped to victory with a 21 under par effort, which contained 19 birdies, an eagle and no dropped shots in the entire 72 holes. DJ became the youngest man to secure a hole-in-one in a Major Championship when in 1973, at the age of 19, he aced the eighth hole at Royal Troon. In the 1988 Open Championship he played the first nine holes of his third round in 29 shots, going on to finish 11th. DJ is the current, or past, holder of 31 course records in Europe, USA, Africa, the Far East and the Caribbean. He sits on The PGA European Tour Board of Directors.
