Player Notes

Capped an unforgettable 2005 by capturing his maiden European Seniors Tour title at the final event of the year, the Arcapita Seniors Tour Championship, and finishing third on the Order of Merit. Earlier in the season the Irishman recorded his first wins on the US Champions Tour with the SBC Classic in March and the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf a month later, which helped him to 10th place on the 2005 US Champions Tour Money List. Lost a playoff to Tom Watson at The Senior British Open Championship, presented by Aberdeen Asset Management, and in October underwent an emergency operation after a routine check-up revealed a serious problem with the arteries supplying blood to his heart. Went under the knife that evening but was back on the golf course five days later. Still holds the record as the oldest winner on The European Tour when, during his 28th consecutive season in 2001, he won the Madeira Island Open at the age of 48 years and 34 days 20 days older than the previous oldest champion, Neil Coles. It also meant he had won in four different decades, following his first win in 1979. Learned the game on the links of Baltry, Co Louth, and has always been a strong player in adverse conditions. Played in two Ryder Cups and was a member of the Irish team which won the Alfred Dunhill Cup in 1988. Became the first European golfer to win the US Champions Tour Qualifying School at the end of the 2002 season.
