Player Notes

Turned 50 on July 17, 2004, and just five days later made an impressive PGA European Seniors Tour debut at The Senior British Open Championship, where he finished joint second. Sealed his first Seniors Tour success at Wentworth Club in August 2005 when he romped to an eight shot victory in the Travis Perkins Senior Masters. Became the third oldest winner on The European Tour behind Des Smyth and Neil Coles when, just three days before his 48th birthday, he won The 2002 Barclays Scottish Open at Loch Lomond, his eighth European Tour title. Known as 'El Gato' - The Cat because of the way he stealthily stalks and overcomes opponents. Son of a club professional in Cordoba, where he still lives, he won his US Tour card in 1994 but returned after only one season to rejoin his many friends in Europe. Close friend of fellow Argentine, Angel Cabrera, with whom he finished second in the WGC World Cup in their native country in December 2000. Used his own money to help sponsor Cabrera on The European Tour and was rewarded when his prot won the 2001 Open de Argentina and followed that with victory in the 2002 Benson & Hedges International Open. Attributed his success to improved concentration, thanks to the study of an Indian yoga technique, Rhami Hayat. . .In a truly outstanding four-week stretch last summer, the charismatic Argentine finished runner-up at the Senior British Open Championship, retained the Wentworth Senior Masters title and captured his first Senior Major Championship at the JELD-WEN Tradition on the US Champions Tour. Produced some brilliant golf in difficult conditions at The Westin Turnberry Resort that included a second round of seven under par 63, before eventually losing in a play-off to Loren Roberts. Was not denied for long, however, as the following week he successfully defended the Wentworth Senior Masters at Wentworth Club, closing in two under par 70 to finish two clear of Sam Torrance and Horacio Carbonetti. A fortnight later found him in another play-off but this time emerged triumphant, beating American Lonnie Nielsen to the final Major of the US Champions Tour season a victory that ultimately saw him named US Champions Tour Rookie of the Year.
