Player Notes

Won his ninth senior title when he won the Bendinat London Seniors Masters - a victory made all the sweeter given his son Daniel had only taken on his dad's caddie duties four weeks previously. An injured right arm affected Torrance for much of the season, but he still recorded eight Top-10s. Topped the PGA European Seniors Tour Order of Merit for the second year in succession after a hugely impressive 2006, during which he notched up four victories and four runner-up finishes en route to earnings of $347,525 the third highest total in the history of the Seniors Tour. In winning the Sharp Italian Seniors Open and the AIB Irish Seniors Open, in association with Greenstar and Filte Ireland, the Scotsman replicated his earlier successes in these national opens on The European Tour, while the two biggest highlights of his year came in his home country. At The Barlcays Scottish Open in July he became the first golfer to reach 700 events on The European Tour and two months later registered the 40th professional win of his career at the Charles Church Scottish Seniors Open. Fulfilled a lifetime ambition when he finished Number One in Europe for the first time in his long career, having topped the 2005 PGA European Seniors Tour Order of Merit ahead of Carl Mason and Des Smyth. Recorded three wins at the Irvine Whitlock Seniors Classic, the De Vere PGA Seniors Championship and the Bendinat London Seniors Masters - plus six other Top-5 finishes during a year that saw him amass $277,421 in prize money. Joined the Seniors Tour after turning 50 in August 2003 and needed just six starts before notching his first victory, closing with a ten under par 62 to capture the Travis Perkins Senior Masters at Wentworth Club in 2004 which, at the time, matched the lowest round carded on the PGA European Seniors Tour. It was a hugely satisfying victory as it came a short time after he announced he had decided to stop playing in America and focus on playing in Europe so that he could spend more time with his family. Captained the European Ryder Cup Team to victory in The Ryder Cup at The De Vere Belfry in 2002, 17 years after holing the winning putt at the same venue which ended a 28 year drought in the event. Became the first golfer in European Tour history to notch up 600 tournaments in the 1998 Troph Lancme. Started under guidance of his father, Bob his one and only coach at Rossendale in Lancashire before his father returned to Scotland at Largs in Ayrshire. Left school at 13, turned professional at 16, started out on Tour aged 17 and took nine events to make first cut. Won events in the last three decades, the most recent of his 21 European Tour titles being Peugeot Open de France in 1998 after hitting a seven wood 'stiff' at the 71st hole. An early pioneer of the broom handle putter. Awarded MBE in 1996 for services to golf and the OBE in the 2003 New Year Honors List for his inspired Captaincy of Europe's Ryder Cup Team. Won the team event at the 2003 Dunhill links championship at St Andrews in partnership with his son Daniel. . . He was a member of the 1981, '83, '85, '87, '89, '91, '93 and '95 Ryder Cup Team and will be toasted forever as the man who holed the winning putt in the Ryder Cup at Belfry in 1985. . . He was also the first high-profile professional on the European Tour to switch to the 48 inch ""broom handle"" putter after problems putting in 1988. Has used it every year since.
