Player Notes

The PGA European Seniors Tour all-time leading career money winner made history when he secured that accolade when he retained the European Senior Masters at Woburn - his third victory of five in 2007, after also winning the Ryder Cup Wales Seniors Open, Bad Ragaz PGA Seniors Open, the PGA Seniors Championship and the OKI Castellon Open de Espana. The latter was his 19th win in just five years competing on the circuit, en route to his third Order of Merit crown. At Woburn, he held off Italy's Costantino Rocca with a brilliant birdie in their play-off to retain his title, showing similar nerve to that he produced in Wales earlier in the season. Four strokes behind after eight holes of his final round, the Englishman produced four birdies down the testing back nine at Conwy (Caernarvonshire) Golf Club to win by two strokes from overnight leader Juan Quiros of Spain and Ross Drummond of Scotland. . . A back injury hampered his bid for a third consecutive Order of Merit title in 2006 and he had to settle for second place behind Sam Torrance. The Englishman has forged a reputation for ceaseless consistency but that quality eluded him in the final event of the 2005 season, the Arcapita Seniors Tour Championship, where he had to finish above Torrance in order to clinch the Number One spot. Carded just four birdies in three rounds and finished tied 35th to Torrance's third place. Still another impressive year with victories at the 2005 De Vere Northumberland Seniors Classic and 2005 Ryder Cup Wales Senior Open taking his total to 11 PGA European Seniors Tour titles in less than three full seasons. Brilliant rookie year in 2003 proved to be the launch-pad for a supremely consistent run of form and in 2004 joined Tommy Horton as the only other player to successfully defend the John Jacobs Trophy, which goes to the leading golfer on the Order of Merit, following five victories and eight other top five finishes. Bettered the single season earnings record he set in 2003 by amassing earnings of $354,775 (£245,285). Having won his last three events of 2003 and the opening tournament of 2004, the Tobago Plantations Seniors Classic, he became only the fourth European to win four successive events alongside Seve Ballesteros (1986) and Nick Faldo (1988-89) on The European Tour and Horton (1997-98) on the Seniors Tour. Nearly became the first European to win on five consecutive appearances but finished second in the next event in Barbados. In 2003, he became the most successful rookie in Seniors Tour history when he secured the Order of Merit title just four months after turning 50. He became the fastest player to secure four victories (11 starts), only the second player after Horton to win in three consecutive starts and the only other senior professional after Horton to capture four titles in one season. Also lost in a play-off to American Tom Watson in the Senior British Open Championship, presented by MasterCard, at the Westin Turnberry Resort in July 2003. A regular competitor on The European Tour between 1974 and 1997, winning twice in 1994 and finishing in the top 40 on the Order of Merit on no less than 13 occasions. During that time, he registered 62 Top-10 finishes, including a tie for fourth place behind Watson in the 1980 Open Championship at Muirfield. Also won three times on the Safari Tour. Leading up to his 50th birthday, he spent two years working as a referee on the Seniors Tour which he says gave him the appetite to start playing again. Son Andrew is a scratch golfer.
