After three years without a victory, the energetic Spaniard captured the Cannes Mougins Masters when he defeated Des Smyth on the second extra hole. Five other top-10 finishes helped him finish the season in 9th position on the Order of Merit. Has proved something of a nemesis for Smyth, having previously pipped the Irishman to the 2008 Irish Seniors Open at Ballyliffin with a wonderful approach shot to the 18th. Victory in Ireland was his third Senior Tour title in as many years and one of seven top-10 finishes in 2008 – he also was runner up in the Travis Perkins plc Senior Masters – en route to ending the season in 4th place in the Order of Merit. Became king of the mountains when he won the 2007 Open de France Senior de Divonne in the shadow of Mont Blanc for his second victory. Also recorded nine other top-10 finishes in a superb 2007 season, which culminated in him finishing 3rd on the Order of Merit. Exceeded his own expectations when he collected his maiden European Senior Tour title on only his seventh start, closing with a four-under 65 to win the 2006 Bad Ragaz PGA Seniors Open by two strokes. Aided by the altitude of the Alps, the Spaniard produced the lowest 18 hole score of the year with a nine under par second round 61 en route to a winning aggregate 54 hole total of 14 under par 196. Admitted he started 2006 with the aim of keeping his card, having suffered from a bad back towards the end of the previous year. But he ultimately finished 6th on the Order of Merit, after a series of fine performances which included a share of 2nd at the FIRSTPLUS s Seniors Open. His best finish on The European Tour was T2nd in the 1994 Turespaña Open de Tenerife.
