Hole 5, Dream 18

No. 13 - 492 yards, Par 4 at Cheraw State Park Golf Course
Cheraw, S.C.
– David "Brick" Hyduke, PGA Head Professional

Many people refer to Cheraw State Park as “the best kept secret in South Carolina."  While we appreciate the sentiment, we're not so anxious to remain a secret.  We want everyone, within our state and around the country to know that if you are ever looking for a course that provides excellent conditions, a beautiful setting, a challenging layout and - as deemed by Golf Digest's highest honor -- a “Super Value", Cheraw may be exactly what you are looking for.

Our signature hole is one that represents what so many people love about our course. It's tough, it's scenic, it's fair and it's oh-so memorable. Hole no. 13 is a 492 yard par four – yes, par four – that doglegs left and has a green surrounded by water. It actually measures longer than one of the par 5s on the course.

If you are playing the blue tees, you will need to hit a big drive, ideally move the shot right to left and really want to avoid hitting it anywhere to the right. A good drive that can either get around, or over, the corner of trees will catch a slope and roll down quite a ways to a flat area. At least, you really hope it does, because any ball that ends up stopping on the slope leaves a very difficult second shot if you're still hoping to reach the green in regulation. So from the tips, you're looking for at least 260 yards from your drive. From the white tees, maybe 210 yards or so. Either way, it's as demanding a tee shot as you will find in South Carolina.

And if you hit that perfect drive, you're still looking at over 200 yards to the green - over water, with a large bunker to the right that you do not want to be in, and more water to the left and behind. I told you it was quite the challenge.

I often tell players that par is a relative number on this hole, that quite frankly, most players would do better if they forged a plan on the tee box (example, play it as a three-shot hole) and they will score better 90% of the time. If you do happen to make a four (or even better), circle, highlight and underline that number. Some pars are definitely better than others and a par here means you've picked up a shot on most groups and/or tournaments you may be a part of.

But the best thing about our 13th hole is what we say about our entire facility. It's pure golf. There are no houses lining the fairways here, instead it's beautiful Carolina pines. Our location, beside Lake Juniper, is a little bit of heaven on earth. Cheraw State Park combines the best in golf, nature, service and value. Golf Digest thinks so, rating us four and a half stars in its “Best Places to Play" listing in 2008/2009. And we were recently cited as the “Best Municipal Course" in South Carolina. But don't take their word, or ours, about why you should visit – come see for yourself! We're confident you'll agree, it doesn't get much better than Cheraw.
