South Carolina Tourism - Hole 16
Hole 16, Dream 18
No., 9 at Fripp Island's Ocean Point Golf Links
– Char Cormier – Director of Golf
I like to call the ninth hole here at Ocean Point Golf Links "our paradise within our paradise." Fripp Island Resort is one of the most acclaimed and impressive destinations I know of and there are few venues in the country, much less South Carolina, that can offer the views, the accommodations, the abundance of wildlife and the gentle climate that we can. Our award-winning golf courses are top tier because to be a part of this atmosphere, you have to be. We refuse to settle for "good enough," we always strive to be the best.
And that is why our ninth hole, a beautiful and challenging par four designed by famed course architect George Cobb, is a worthy addition to The Dream 18 of South Carolina.
As you step up onto this elevated tee, the first thing you will notice is the view. There just aren’t many comparable views in golf, period. You'll notice the serene pond to the left, the native areas on the right and the Atlantic Ocean straight away. You will probably also notice vacationers strolling on the beach and a few shrimp boats in the background. The fairway is green and lush, the green is perfectly framed by three bunkers around it. And in addition to the view, you will feel and smell the ocean breeze and hear the waves as they crash on the nearby rocks. Take this moment in, it's truly special.
But don't forget, you still have to play the hole! That serene pond on the left? You still have to avoid it with your tee shot. Bail out right? Nope, that native area is out of bounds. Those bunkers that frame the green? They catch a fair share of approach shots too. And once you reach the green, the two-tiers and subtle slopes make every putt a serious challenge to make. All of a sudden, this beauty is showing potential to be a beast. Do you have the game to conquer this great hole? The hole is not long, two good shots will give a very makeable birdie opportunity. But one bad shot and your score is going to reflect in a bad way.
And all of this, of course, is by design. There are several great golf holes in South Carolina, really spectacular layouts. But to narrow it down to 18 holes, to create one fantasy golf course, the criteria has to be incredibly selective – the hole has to offer aesthetics, challenge and atmosphere. We're proud to say we have it. Our guests and visitors proudly vouch for our ninth hole (and all of Fripp Island Resort). We are sure you will too. Please come visit and find out for yourself.
