Ask your Shafts question |

Q: Bob:
A: Jerry Elwell (Southern California Section): The rule of thumb has been graphite is lighter and will allow you to swing faster and hit the ball further. I would suggest you go with steel shafts in both woods and irons. They are heavier and will provide you with more stability in swinging the club and I have found through years of testing that you will actually hit the ball further with heavier shafts (contrary to popular belief). I would suggest you look for a good set of Dynamic Gold S300 in your irons (the reason is they are actually Regular shafts). I have measured them for years. You can pick a head model that you like - your question was about shafts so I will leave it at that. You can do some research or shopping and find some woods with steel shafts. If not you do not want shafts that are too light (50 - 70 gram range) You want steel shafts or some heavier shafts that are quality shafts. Years of research have helped me answer your question - Irons Dnamic Gold S300 steel shafts. For you an X Shaft heavy shaft - it will measure out at Stiff even though the label says X. I know the shafts! This is contrary to popular stuff!!! Now make sure you get grips on there that fit your hands - much bigger than the standard grip. Your ring finger on your left hand should just touch the pad. If the fingers dig in the grip is too small. If there is space - it is too large. Enjoy the game and Make A Lot of Birdies, Dr. Jerry Elwell
