Lesson Learned

At the RSM Classic, Vaughn Taylor hit some of the best shots of the day in very windy conditions. PGA Professional and 2013 PGA Teacher of the Year Lou Guzzi offers some advice for having success in the wind.
A Lesson Learned: Hitting the green under pressure
Well first of all, congratulations to Mark Wilson.  Two wins in three starts this year! How's that for a pretty good percentage?  He overcame a tough field under tough conditions to win.  A well-deserved kudos to one of the good guys on Tour.

A Lesson Learned: Finish the race with what put you on top
You have to feel for Robert Garrigus. To be so close, to have that first PGA Tour win so firm in your grasp as you stand on the 18th tee of the final round and not walk away with the trophy, he'll be thinking about the events of that hole for a long time to come, I'm sure.

A Lesson Learned: Hitting it longer off the tee
Though the PGA Tour has been in action for a few weeks, the eyes of the golf world really wake up traditionally when the tees go in the ground at Torrey Pines.

A Lesson Learned: When your pace of play is altered
For those that might have been engrossed in the football playoffs on Sunday, you missed another great playoff - this one on the PGA Tour. Jhonattan Vegas won a three-man playoff, including winning on the second playoff hole after hitting a ball into the water!

A Lesson Learned: J.B. Holmes and the FBR Open
For all of the fair weather golf fans that changed the channel when J.B. Holmes found the hazard on 15, you missed a great finish in the FBR Open.

A Lesson Learned: Becoming a Pressure Player
Jim Furyk finished with an amazing bunker shot on the 18th hole to win $1.35 million in the Tour Championship at East Lake and an additional $10 million in the FedEx Cup. He was able to handle the pressure that would bring most of us (mere mortals) to tears.

A Lesson Learned: Turn bad days into big wins
In what has to be one of the most popular wins on the PGA Tour this year, Dustin Johnson won his second event of the year and the Ryder Cup team member is now on the short list for "Player of the Year" honors. Congratulations Dustin on an outstanding week and a job well done.

A Lesson Learned: Hoffman's solid bunker play no fluke
Charley Hoffman's pure ball striking and solid putting certainly were key ingredients to Monday's final-round 62 at the Deutsche Bank Championship. His 11 birdies clearly helped him run away from the field and vault up the FedExCup point list.

A Lesson Learned: The most important shot of a tournament? The next one you're going to hit.
There will be a great deal of attention focused on Martin Laird’s three putt on the 72nd hole, especially that lag putt that ran 7 feet past the hole, or the second putt that never touched the cup.

A Lesson Learned: The PGA Championship and knowing the local rules of a course
Following the controversial Sunday at the 92nd PGA Championship, there were many questions about the ruling which penalized Dustin Johnson and kept him out of the playoff for the title.

A Lesson Learned: Stay true to your strategy
It was fortunate for Hunter Mahan that he made a bunch of key putts down the stretch at Firestone, because several times it looked to like he either didn't have a pre-set strategy to play the final holes, or if he did, he didn't stick with it.

A Lesson Learned: What you don't think about when you are going low
The seemingly abundent number of low scores in recent weeks will trigger a flurry of questions from golf fans; most notably, are the players getting better or are the courses getting easier?

A Lesson Learned: Secret to going low is to Play it Forward
Carl Pettersson did something unusual this week - as you probably already know. Yes, he shot an amazing 60 on Saturday, and then followed it up with a 67 to win the RBC Canadian Open, but that's not what I'm referring to - not exactly.

A Lesson Learned: How watching Oosthuizen's win can help your game
Each year when I watch the British Open I am reminded of two extremely important concepts that every golfer should learn and master. First, when around the green, putt when you can. Second, hit down on your woods like you hit down on your irons.

A Lesson Learned: Steve Stricker shows that the situation matters
It wasn't long after the beginning of the 2010 John Deere Classic that you knew it was going to be a special tournament. After all, most of us thought that we were going to watch a Paul Goydos runaway victory after he posted only the fourth 59 ever shot on the PGA Tour.

A Lesson Learned: Breaking out of a putting slump
It was another exciting week for golf, starting with our own Illinois' Mike Small winning his third PGA Professional National Championship, the ladies had an exciting four-person playoff and Justin Rose wins his second tournament (and probably should have been third) in the last six weeks.
