The Dream 18 of South Carolina: Hole no. 11 - The 18th hole at Wild Dunes

The Links Course at Wild Dunes Resort is a classic golf challenge featuring rolling fairways, rustling palms, massive dunes and finishing holes along the Atlantic, with the oceanfront 18th hole being one of the most acclaimed, stunning par-5 finishing holes in South Carolina. The 6,396 yard, par 70 course permits players to walk the length of the course regardless of time or day, allowing players to enjoy the seaside masterpiece in the traditional way the game has been played for centuries. The course represents legendary golf course designer Tom Fazio's first solo project and continues to be ranked among the top courses in the United States. "I saw right away that it was an architect's dream," Fazio said of the Links Course. "It had all the elements you could ask for -- trees, water, dunes, and an ocean coast. The routing was relatively easy because some of the holes looked like they had been there forever. The place reminded me of Pine Valley... An architect comes across that kind of land only once or twice in a lifetime. "The 18th hole of the Links Course in particular is one of the more spectacular finishing holes in the Southeast. Playing on the ocean and amongst the dunes is as premier a location as you can get. It was true when the course was designed more than three decades ago, and it's still true today." Beside the natural beauty of the sea oats blowing in the wind, the sand dunes framing the hole and the panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean, the 18th hole is truly one of the most memorable holes golfers will ever play. Each day the hole presents players with different challenges due to the ever-changing wind conditions. A quality tee-shot gives the low handicap players a chance to go for the green in two; however, a slight miss-hit and par is no "gimme". The higher handicap golfers have plenty of room to navigate the hole and walk away satisfied with having completed a great hole. This Labor Day, Wild Dunes' Links Course turns 30 years old, and we're inviting golf enthusiasts to join the celebration.
