Justin Thomas can join rare company with Jack Nicklaus this week

Published on

This week at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, Justin Thomas has a chance to do something only Jack Nicklaus has done before him: win a PGA Tour event on the same course where he won a major the year before.

Last August, Thomas picked up his first major victory in the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow. He's in the field this week at that course for this week's Wells Fargo Championship.

In 1972, Nicklaus won the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach, followed by the Bing Crosby National Pro-Am at Pebble in 1973.

The last three times where major winners would have had a chance at pulling off the rare major-tour event double in consecutive years, none of them went back for the regular tour event. That would be Tiger Woods after winning the 2008 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines (missed the Tour event at Torrey the next year due to injury); Graeme McDowell after winning the 2010 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach (did not return for the Pro-Am); and Rory McIlroy after winning the 2011 U.S. Open at Congressional (did not return to play the National there the following summer).

After Woods won the 2000 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach, he tied for 13th in the 2001 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

Only four courses -- Pebble Beach, Torrey Pines, Riviera and Pinehurst No. 2 -- have held majors and tour events in the same year.

Woods is only player to win a major and a PGA Tour event on the same course in the same year. He did that twice: Pebble Beach in 2000 and Torrey Pines in 2008.

Nicklaus won twice at Pebble Beach in 1972 and Ben Hogan won twice at Riviera in 1948, both including a U.S. Open.

The Wells Fargo Championship has traditionally been held at Quail Hollow since 2003, but was moved to Eagle Point in Wilmington, N.C., in 2017 as Quail Hollow prepared for the season's final major.
