Piercy's 80-foot putt that led to rare red figures

US Open alternate Scott Piercy's crazy long putt leads to rare under-par round

Last year's U.S. Open at Erin Hills, the opening round score was a blistering 7-under par by Rickie Fowler. Don't expect that kind of score this year at Shinnecock.

Scott Piercy was one of the four alternates that made it into the field on Monday and he's the first to card a round in red figures so far at this year's U.S. Open as the marquee players struggled to rounds well over par.

One of the shots that helped Piercy head into Friday in a good position is this incredible putt on No. 12 from 81 feet to make birdie.

Ian Poulter is the only other player from the morning wave to finish with a round under par. He also is at 1-under.
