Played The Straits a couple weeks ago. Course was in great shape even with all of the tournaments buildings being erected for the 2015 PGA Championship. My caddy was excellent, knew the greens, provided good yardages, and kept the game moving. The course certainly challenged my game enough, especially the par 3's. Take a camera as this is a beautiful course.

I have played this course several times though it has been a while. In many ways it seems like course you would see in Great Britain. It even includes the sheep. The ground is not like anything I have experienced in North America. Fortunately, the wind from over seas never showed up when I was playing. If I had to choose between this course or Pebble Beach, I would choose this one as the most challenging.

Good corse. It looks hard.

About This Course

Designed by Pete Dye, Whistling Straits emulates the great old seaside links courses of the British Isles, invoking an image of the game founded more than 400 years ago. The Straits Course is open with rugged and windswept terrain. A more mature course than one would expect, golfers encounter huge sandy areas, deep pot bunkers,grass-topped dunes, big and undulating greens and majestic views of Lake Michigan from each of its 18 holes. The dramatic par-3 17th, the course's unofficial signature hole, features a green precariously perched over water and sand. Whistling Straits also features:

Two miles of uninterrupted shoreline on Lake Michigan

- Eight holes hugging the Lake Michigan shoreline
- Bluffs and massive sand dune areas
- Natural fescue fairways
- A flock of Scottish Blackface sheep call the course home
- Elevation change on the course (hole 15) is approximately 80 feet
- The Straits Course is a walking course; walking distance for 18 holes is approximately five miles
- Three stone bridges at holes 9, 10 and 18

Whistling Straits is consistently ranked as one of the top courses in the U.S. and the World by Golf Magazine's panel of experts.

A masterpiece in the world of golf created by Pete Dye, the Straits course at Whistling Straits Open is on rugged and windswept terrain that defines the walking-only, links-style Course sculpted along two miles of Lake Michigan shoreline.

The Irish course at Whistling Straits is just inland from the great lake and interspersed by four meandering streams. The grassland-and-dunes aspect of the Irish Course is a deceivingly tranquil landscape. Both traditional and memorable, the Irish Course is full of unique challenges.

From Sports Illustrated Writer-Reporter Rick Lipsey: Pressure? Imagine having to turn a white canvas into a Van Gogh with a tycoon looking over your shoulder. That's basically the challenge golf architect Pete Dye faced in the mid-1990s when Herb Kohler, the plumbing fixture magnate, hired Dye to turn some pancake-flat treeless farmland on Lake Michigan in Wisconsin into the world's most challenging and beautiful layout. Dye didn't disappoint. Indeed, the Straits was awarded the 2004 PGA Championship in 2000, just two years after it opened, and for good reason. By importing 13,126 truckloads of sand, Dye metamorphosed the barren landscape 60 miles north of Milwaukee into a design marked by vastly rolling dunes, sinuous fairways and thick heather and fescue rough. Oh, there are also over 1,400 roughhewn bunkers, 20- to 40-foot cliffs on the eight holes abutting Lake Michigan and greens that roll like the Himalayas. In all, the Straits measures 7,597 yards and has three par-4s of 500 or more yards.
