Watch PGA stars try to get closest to the pin in a Hickory Challenge at the Scottish Open

The European Tour is at it again. 

With some of the PGA's biggest stars at the Gullane Golf Club for the Aberdeen Standard Investments Scottish Open, they took to the 178-yard par-3 for a Hickory Challenge. Using a hickory club, stars like Rickie Fowler, Padraig Harrington, Rafael Cabrera-Bello, Charley Hoffman, and Patrick Reed took aim at the 12th-hole pin to see who could get nearest to the hole.

Just what is a Hickory club? Probably no one used them better than Bobby Jones, but by today's standards, they are a bit outdated. Here's how some of the pros described them.

"A hundred-eighty yards. Normally, that's a 7-iron, but today it's a Hickory," Rickie Fowler said.

"I got a selection of butter knives to choose from," is how Danny Willett described them.

"Looks way too upright already, wrong color golf shaft and a tiny ball," Patrick Reed explained. "Besides that, it's perfect."

Some hit it well and got right up to the pin. Others seemed to have trouble controlling it, even hitting their own brother-in-law on the sidelines. So, you think you could hit the old Hickory and get close to the pin?
