Brandon Stone wins the Scottish Open after nearly shooting European Tour's first-ever 59

Brandon Stone entered the Scottish Open at Gullane ranked 371st in the Official World Golf Ranking and he left with a European Tour victory and nearly the first sub-60 round in the tour's history. His Scottish Open victory also qualifies him for The Open Championship at Carnoustie.

Stone climbed 10 spots in the tournament leaderboard to win on Sunday as he shot a 10-under 60 to take a four-stroke lead over second-place Eddie Pepperell. He had a birdie putt on the par-4 18th hole that broke wide left as he narrowly missed shooting a 59 for the round.

The putt would've given him five birdies and one eagle on the back nine, and nine birdies for the round.

Stone's 10-under 60 was the 19th time in European Tour history that a player has shot a 60. Most recently, Peter Uihlein (Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at Kingsbarns) and Scott Jamieson (Portugal Masters at Oceanico Victoria) both shot a low-round of 60 in 2013.

David Llewellyn was the first player on the European Tour to shot a 60, when he carded one at the AGF Biarritz Open in 1988.

Five players – Hideki Matsuyama, Michael Hoey, Sebastian Soderberg, Paul Dunne and Ross Fisher – on the European Tour shot a 61 last year.

There have been eight players who have carded a sub-60 round on the PGA Tour – most recently, Adam Hadwin's 13-under 59 at the 2017 CareerBuilder Challenge.

Jim Furyk's 12-under 58 at the 2016 Travelers Championship is the record for the lowest round in PGA Tour history (he also shot a 59 at the 2013 BMW Championship), and Justin Thomas, Stuart Appleby, Paul Goydos, David Duval, Chip Beck and Al Geiberger have also shot a 59.

Stone entered the Scottish Open with two European Tour victories in his career – the Alfred Dunhill Championship in 2017 and BMW SA Open in 2016. Now, he has added a third career European Tour victory in a year in which his best previous finish in a tournament was tied for 22nd at Trophee Hassan II in April.

He missed the cut in nine of the 16 European Tour events he had played in this year before winning the Scottish Open.
