PGA Professional Dave McNabb wins $100,000 in Phila. PGA Classic

 

PHILADELPHIA – It was a phenomenal day for one lucky golfer at Sunnybrook Golf Club.

 

One hundred thirty-seven professionals and 11 amateurs teed off Tuesday at the Haverford Trust Philadelphia PGA Classic, but only one man took home the $100,000 grand prize – the largest prize of any one-day local PGA tournament in the country.

 

That was Dave McNabb, the PGA head professional at Applebrook Golf Club in Malvern, who finally won the tournament after finishing third in 2014, seventh in 2012, and 10th last year.

 

McNabb, 50, has been on a tear in the Philadelphia PGA Section. His victory was his second championship in May.

 

His 10th-place finish last year earned him only $250, which must seem like chump change compared with his winnings this time around.

 

McNabb finished at 5-under-par 67 on the Plymouth Meeting course, 2 shots better than Andrew Turner of Whitford Country Club. Turner's 69 was the leading score until McNabb finished his round.

 

Despite finishing second, Turner must feel as though he lost $95,000 for the day: The consolation prize was $5,000.

 

Bill Sautter of Philadelphia Cricket Club was third at 70. Bill Walker (Riverton) and Jakob Gerney (Trump National) shot 71s to tie for fourth.

 

La Salle University golfer Jason Calhoun fired a hole-in-one on the fifth hole, earning 100 shares of Coca-Cola, worth roughly $4,500.

 

McNabb said he was not sure what he would do with the grand purse from the 20th anniversary of the tournament.

 

"You're going to have to talk to my wife about that one," McNabb joked. "We're going to have fun with it, I can tell you that much. But quite honestly, I haven't gotten that far yet. We'll put it to good use, that's for sure."
