Two bald eagles hatched on golf course are named after golf terms

 

REDDING, Calif. – The two newest eaglets from Redding's famous bald eagle pair have been named.

 

Going with a theme consistent with where the two eagles were born, online voters overwhelmingly chose to name the birds "Birdie" and "Bogey," two golf terms.

 

Friends of the Redding Eagles confirmed earlier this month that two bald eagles hatched in a nest in a tree on the course at Riverview Golf and Country Club in Redding.

 

As in years past, North State residents were invited to vote online to name the two eaglets. Terri Lhuillier, an avid eagle watcher from Redding, said that the names were chosen after several rounds of online voting using Google Docs.

Voters were asked in the final round to vote for one pair of names from among the three most popular pair chosen from earlier rounds.

 

Birdie and Bogey received 645 votes, or 68.6 percent of the total. River and Sky received 204 votes, or 21.7 percent of the total. And Chip and Putt had 91 votes, or 9.7 percent of votes cast, Lhuillier said.

 

Some of the other pairs of names that did not make it into the top three include Merle and Haggard, Buster and Posey and Stars and Stripes.

 

The eaglets' parents had previously nested in a tree along the Sacramento River just north of the Highway 44 bridge in Redding. But this year the eagles, Liberty and Spirit, moved their nest to a gray pine at the country club.
