Brian Glennon's clutch putting sends him to the Drive, Chip and Putt Championship in Augusta

Brian Glennon of Hingham will represent the Northeast region in the 14-and-15-year-old age group at the PGA Drive-Chip-Putt National Finals at Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia. The competition will take place on April 2, the Sunday before the Masters tournament begins, and it will feature 80 golfers ages 7 to 15 from around the nation.

Competitors each get three drives, three chips and three putts, and they score points based on how close they get their ball to the hole, although drives must land in the fairway to score points. Brian won the Northeast finals at The Country Club in Brookline to qualify for the national finals.

He performed well in the driving portion, hitting all three drives in the fairway.

"I hit all three of them pretty good," Brian said. "I was in second place after the driving."

He faltered during the chipping section, falling to sixth place entering the final leg of the competition.

"He was way behind going into the putting," said Brian's father, Matt Glennon.

"Going into the putting I didn't really think I had any chance of moving on, so I decided to just go for it on all three of my putts," Brian said.

He drilled his first putt from 6 feet, drained his second putt from 13 feet and knocked his third put from 30 feet to within about a foot of the hole to put the pressure on his fellow competitors.

"It was kind of amazing," said Matt Glennon. "He was pretty clutch."

After completing his putts, Brian had to watch the remainder of the round to find out where he would place.

"After I saw the guy in second fall short of me I realized I actually might have a chance," he said. "I told my dad that if I won he was coming to Augusta with me."

The leader was also unable to match Brian's putting performance, which earned him a trip to Augusta.

Brian is a member of Cohasset Golf Club and the Harmon Golf Club in Rockland. He spends a great deal of his free time tuning his golf game.

"He's a pretty avid golfer. That's his favorite sport," said Matt Glennon. "He's been playing golf since he was 6, but in the last year he decided that this is what he wants to focus on."

Brian participates in local youth golf tournaments, and he knows that he alone is responsible for his performance on the course.

"I like being by myself, relying on myself and not having to rely on anyone else," he said.
