Big group of past national champs to compete in Southworth Senior PNC

ALDIE, Va. – An elite field of 264 PGA Professionals, at least 50 years of age, will converge Oct. 10-13, at Creighton Farms in Aldie, Va., and River Creek Club in Leesburg, Va., as they begin play in the silver anniversary of the Southworth Senior PGA Professional National Championship presented by Mercedes-Benz USA. 

The 2013 field features 10 past Champions: Tom Joyce of Huntington, N.Y. (1990, '91); Ed Sabo of Tequesta, Fla. (2000, '01); Mike San Filippo of Hobe Sound, Fla. (2002, '05); Jeff Thomsen of Boise, Idaho (2003); Jim White of Lincoln, Neb. (2004); Jeff Coston of Blaine, Wash. (2006); Bill Loeffler of Littleton, Colo. (2007); Kirk Hanefeld of Acton, Mass (2008, '11); Bill Britton of Colts Neck, N.J. (2009); and defending champion Jim Woodward of Edmond, Okla.

Seven members of the field own a PGA Professional National Championship title: Brett Upper of Scottsdale, Ariz. (1990); Ron McDougal of Westbury, N.Y. (1992); Steve Schneiter of Sandy, Utah (1995); Darrell Kestner of Glen Cove, N.Y. (1996); Bruce Zabriski of Rye, N.Y. (1997); Wayne DeFrancesco of Columbia, Md. (2001); and Barry Evans, Charleston, W.Va. (2002).

Finally, there are seven members of the field who are past PGA Assistant Champions: Kestner (1982, '87); Jon Fiedler of Camarillo, Calif. (1985); Webb Heintzelman of Middleton, Mass. (1988); Steve Gotsche of Great Bend, Kan. (1990); Kim Thompson of Salt Lake City, Utah (1991); Bill Loeffler of Littleton, Colo. (1992); and Zabriski (1995).

“The field this year is exceptionally strong. It includes a large collection of past national champions, and accomplished players from every level of professional golf,” said Mark Tscheteschot, PGA director of member championships and a PGA master professional. “The golf courses will provide a tough test all week, but it will exciting to watch these players perform at a high level.”

The field features PGA Professionals who have qualified through one of the 41 PGA Sections. The low 70 scorers and ties after Friday's second round advance to the weekend's final 36 holes at Creighton Farms. 

The 2013 National Champion will have his name inscribed on the Leo F. Fraser Trophy, while the top eight finishers, including ties, will receive exemptions into the 2014 Senior PGA Professional National Championship.

The low 35 finishers will qualify for the 75th Senior PGA Championship presented by KitchenAid, May 20-25, 2014, at Harbor Shores in Benton Harbor, Mich.

The top five finishers will be exempt into the Champions Tour National Finals at TPC Scottsdale (Ariz.), provided they have submitted an entry by the entry deadline.

Southworth Development of Newton, Mass., is in its third year of title sponsorship in 2013. Mercedes-Benz also joined as a presenting sponsor in 2011.
