Thinking Outside the Box

Thinking Outside the Box

I recently observed a local PGA Professional conduct his first junior golf camp of the summer. WOW! Dozens of kids participating, dozens more parents watching and supporting, and most importantly, FUN!

This camp certainly had the typical golf instruction you would expect at a camp – discussion on the importance of safety, basic fundamentals of the set up and swing, and training on all aspects of the game – putting, chipping, and full swing.

What it also had, in addition to the traditional lineup, were strength and resistance training, with the use of an impact bag and tug of war; putting challenges through the “Lucky Charms” putting course; and “Dude Drums”! Yes, you read that correctly, the camp included a visit by a local musician with his drum sets to encourage the juniors on the importance of rhythm and flow in the golf swing. The kids absolutely loved it! The entertainment and the interaction the kids had with the drums were amazing, and very unique. The PGA Professional made the camp fun, entertaining, and educational.  He is a true leader in growing the game and inspiring our youth. By incorporating all of the unique elements like what was done at this camp, kids are inspired not only to develop their golf skills, but also foster their health and fitness, musical appreciation, and creativity.
