Wow, what a great week and very exciting finish to the 35th Junior PGA Championship. The weather today (Thursday) was absolutely perfect and the course conditions were right for great scoring. Denny McCarthy of Burtonsville, Md., won the boys’ division and the Jack Nicklaus Trophy with a 54-hole total of 9-under-par 207. (Have to say this was special to me as a fellow Marylander!) We had a dramatic three-hole playoff in the girls’ division, with Cassy Isakawa of Wailuku, Hawaii, sinking a three-foot putt to clinch the Patty Berg Trophy. There was a great deal of buzz this week for juniors trying to qualify for this year’s U.S. Junior Ryder Cup team. The matches will be held at Gleneagles in Scotland, and our team will be lead by past PGA President M.G. Orender. We had a great crowd watching today for the third and final round, and they stayed for the awards presentation. On Wednesday, more than 100 juniors come out from the local YMCAs to have lunch and watch the game of golf. It touched me to see so many kids excited to come and watch golf and many of the superstars of tomorrow. Fort Wayne and Sycamore Hills Golf Club have embraced this event and made it very special. All the compliments and kudos for a great week to Sycamore Hills Golf Club's General Manager Don Hunter, PGA Head Professional Tim Frazier and Superintendent Jeff Geller. A heartfelt thank you to the friendly and hospitable volunteers. Congratulations and thanks to Tournament Director Chris Childers and all the staff from The PGA. And thank you for reading my blogs!
