Hossler advances in Junior Amateur, Jutanugam moves on in Girls Junior

U.S. Open qualifier Beau Hossler overcame a rough start to the match-play portion of the U.S. Junior Amateur on Wednesday before advancing to the second round.

Hossler, a 16-year-old U.S. Open qualifier from Mission Viejo, Calif., beat Miller Capps of Denver, N.C., 3 and 2, bouncing back after losing the first four holes.

Hossler, who played in the U.S. Open at Congressional Country Club last month, made seven birdies in the final 12 holes on the 7,133-yard layout. A downhill 20-footer for birdie on the 355-yard 15th hole put Hossler 2 up to take full command.

Jordan Spieth of Dallas, the 2009 winner of this championship, was in control in his 4-and-3 victory over Blake Toolan of Phoenix. Jim Liu, the 15-year-old defending champion from Smithtown, N.Y., topped Nicolo Galletti of Clayton, Calif., 2 and 1.

Meanwhile in Olympia Fields, Ill., Casie Cathrea, Eimi Koga, Gabriella Then and Thailand’s Ariya Jutanugam advanced to the second round of match play at the U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship.

Seven of the top eight players won in the first round, with fourth-seeded Nicole Morales of South Salem, N.Y., losing 5 and 3 to Bryana Nguyen of Columbia, Md.

Jutanugam, a 15-year-old who played in the U.S. Women’s Open two weeks ago, beat Marissa Chow of Honolulu, 6 and 4. The second-seeded Cathrea of Livermore, Calif., defeated Lakareber Abe of Angleton, Texas, 2 up, and Koga of Honolulu got bas Mega Bionien of Altus, Okla, 3 and 2.

Then, seeded eighth, beat Lou Daniela Uy of the Philippines, 7 and 6, and Jisog Keel of Canada got past Kayli Quinton of Houston in 19 holes.
