PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (Dec. 15, 2015) – Ben Engle birdied the third playoff hole Tuesday to defeat Rod Perry and win Event No. 5 of the PGA Tournament Series at PGA Golf Club.
Engle started the day four shots behind Perry, but charged into contention with a 31 on the front nine and shot 67. When he and Perry bogeyed No. 18, they headed to the playoff after finishing at 8-under 136.
Engle hit a 6-iron to 6 feet on the 195-yard third hole at the Dye Course. Perry actually hit his approach inside of Engle's, but Engle rammed his putt in and Perry's lipped out.
"I had hit a 7-iron on the hole downwind during the round, but I knew I couldn't get the 7-iron there in the playoff," said Engle, who works at the Woodstock Club in Indianapolis. "I was already thinking about what shot I was going to hit on the fourth hole because I thought Rod was going to make it."
Perry, a two-time PGA Professional Player of the Year from Port Orange, Fla., opened with a 65, but he settled for a 71 Tuesday after three late bogeys. He was unlucky when he hit his second shot at the par-5 17th into a bush and made bogey after taking an unplayable.
"I missed putts on 17, 18, 1 and 3," Perry said. "I don’t care how close you hit it, you still has to make the putts. But I would have taken getting into a playoff at the start of the tournament."

Brian Norman of The Colony, Texas shot a 68 to finish tied for third with Adam Koloff (70), Frank Bensel (69), Jim Troy (69), Mark Mielke (71) and Rich Berberian (70).
Matt Dobyns, who clinched OMEGA PGA Professional Player of the Year honors with a victory in Event No. 2, remains the Series’ money leader at $9,840 with one tournament left. Jeffrey Schmid is second at $6,713.
