Brett Melton shoots 64 to win Event No. 3 of PGA Tournament Series

 

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (Dec. 8, 2015) – Brett Melton birdied the 17th hole to cap an 8-under 64 and win Event No. 3 of the PGA Tournament Series by a shot over Daniel Urban at PGA Golf Club on Wednesday.

 

Melton was just off the green on the par-5 17th hole in two shots and chipped to 1 1/2 feet for the crucial birdie to finish at 12-under 132 on the drenched Ryder Course. It was his third PGA Tournament Series victory.

 

"I had kind of a dodgy lie, but I hit a real good chip," said Melton, the Director of Golf at Country Club of Old Vincennes in Indiana. "The way the course was playing, with lift, clean and place and no wind, you felt like you need to get to 11- or 12-under. It always feels good to make birdies when you need to."

 

Urban, the Head PGA Professional at Prestwick Village in Michigan, birdied his last two holes to match Melton's 64. He kick-started his round by chipping in for birdie at the second hole, and also made a couple of good up-and-downs.

 

"Making good pars is almost better than making birdies," Urban said. "When you get your ball in your hand, it's easier to hit shots to makeable distance."

 

Yong Joo of Bristol, Va., had a second consecutive 67 and was alone in third at 134.

 

First-round co-leaders Marshall Talkington and Michael Meisenzahl shot 69s and tied for fourth with Bob Sowards (68) at 135.

 

Matt Dobyns, who last week clinched his first OMEGA PGA Professional Player of the Year Award, shot 65 and tied for eighth place.
