California, Georgia to meet again in PGA Junior League Championship final

DULUTH, Ga. -- For the third consecutive year, Team California and Team Georgia will meet for the title in the PGA Junior League Golf Championship. Both teams went 3-0 in their conference matches and will meet Sunday morning in a nine-hole Championship match at TPC Sugarloaf.
Team Georgia won the 2013 Championship, while Team California won the title in 2012.
Team Indiana and Team Tennessee, which each finished 2-1 in their respective conference matches, will compete in the match for third place on Sunday.
Team Connecticut and Team Texas will play in the fifth place match, while Team Iowa and Team New Jersey will compete for seventh place.
All eight teams will play one match tomorrow morning. The 2014 PGA Junior League Golf Championship Trophy will be awarded at a ceremony following play.
Each team played three matches between Friday and Saturday to determine the winner from the East (Team Georgia) and West (Team California) Conference. The eight teams competing in the 2014 PGA Junior League Golf Championship qualified by winning their respective regional competition.
The team format of PGA Junior League Golf features matches with points awarded based on number of holes won. Coaches are able to alternate players every three holes, ensuring all team members play in each match.
Team Georgia only played in the morning session on Saturday, defeating Team Connecticut 10 to 2. PGA Professional Chuck Scoggins, the Captain of Team Georgia, said the match was much closer than the score indicated.
“The overall score was very misleading,” Scoggins explained. “Both teams played really well, and our team had to play exceptional golf to win those points.”
Scoggins is eager to watch his team play in the Championship match.
“I know it’s going to be a lot of fun tomorrow and if we play our game, we’ll be just fine,” said Scoggins. “We’re going to relax this afternoon and get some rest before a big day tomorrow.”
Team California played two matches on Saturday, defeating Team New Jersey in the morning session, 11 to 1, and Team Indiana, 9.5 to 2.5, in the afternoon match.
“These kids are phenomenal and I’m so proud of how they’ve played,” said Collins. “Win or lose tomorrow, every team that’s made it here is a winner.”
Danielle Suh, a member of Team California, is proud of how her team has played.
“We’ve played as a team every match so far,” said Suh. “It’s been a long journey but I’ve had so much fun.”
Much like other recreational league sports, PGA Junior League Golf participants play in team uniforms with jersey numbers. Young golfers learn the game and play under the direction of PGA/LPGA Professionals, who serve as team captains.
