A closer look at the FedExCup champions

A closer look at the FedExCup champions

For a second time, Rory McIlroy is your FedEx Cup Champion.

McIlroy cruised to a two-shot win in the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club to win the FedExCup and the $15 million prize that comes with it. This was the first year the PGA Tour used its new scoring system where the players started anywhere from 10-under par to even par based on their ranking in the top 30 heading into the tournament.

What does it take to become a FedExCup champion? Great, play, obviously, but timing is massive as well.

Just ask Bill Haas. The 2011 FedExCup Champion remains the only season-long winner to have had just one PGA Tour victory that season. It was a timely one, however, seeing as he did it at the Tour Championship.

Billy Horschel, the 2014 winner, also knows about timing. Horschel was having a mediocre season at best four years ago. He qualified for the playoffs, but after a missed cut at the Barclays, it looked as though the Deutsche Bank Championship at TPC Boston might be his final start of the season.

But not so fast. Horschel tied for second at that tournament and then rattled off two straight wins at the BMW Championship and the Tour Championship to flip the switch and turn an otherwise forgettable one into one players dream about.

Of the 11 FedExCup champions (Tiger Woods and McIlroy each won twice), seven are major winners and only Henrik Stenson in 2013 won the FedExCup before capturing a major.

There are only two instances in FedExCup history where the eventual winner didn't play all of the playoff events. Those players are Woods in 2007, who skipped the Barclays and Jim Furyk in 2010, who also missed the Barclays.

Furyk's situation, however, was different than Tiger's. Furyk was scheduled to play, but was disqualified from the tournament before it begane after missing his pro-am tee time.

Jordan Spieth is the only player in FedExCup history to miss the cut in more than one of the four events and still win. He missed back-to-back cuts at the Barclays and Deutsche Bank Championship in 2015 before a T13 at the BMW Championship and a win at the Tour Championship.
