Countdown to The Celtic Manor for the 38th Ryder Cup

The 38th Ryder Cup, which will be conducted Oct. 1-3, makes its first appearance in Wales at the Celtic Manor's Twenty Ten Course near Newport, Wales. PGA NEWS begins a countdown to the Ryder Cup, with a series that reflects upon the personalities and some special moments associated with golf's most compelling event. 1981 - The last U.S. domination Walton Heath Golf Club — Surrey, England With a roster of players who owned a combined 36 major championships, the United States enjoyed its final domination on the Ryder Cup scoreboard, 18 1/2 to 9 1/2. The U.S. ended the second day of foursomes and four-balls with a 7-1 lead, just behind the second-day all-time mark of 7 1/2 points in 1967. U.S. Captain Dave Marr, the 1965 PGA Champion, was described by Christopher Plumridge of the London Guardian: "The 48-year-old Marr, whose crumpled good looks and twanging accent make you think of a trail boss in some remake of Rawhide." Marr apparently used all his spurs and whips to great use, as his talented team coasted. The duo of Jack Nicklaus and Larry Nelson each finished 4-0. Marr had reason to encourage his players. He said he remembered words of warning from his cousin, Jack Burke Jr., who was at the time the last U.S. Captain to guide a losing team: "The Ryder Cup is different than teeing it up for money. You can always talk to your landlord about the rent, but if we lose, we may not get back in the country ... It could mean a posting to El Salvador."
