PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (Jan. 4, 2016) – Randy Erskine did something Tuesday for the fourth time in his career, something few golfers accomplish.

He bettered his age by three shots, firing an 8-under 64 to take the first-round lead in the PGA Senior Stroke Play Championship (60 and older) at PGA Golf Club.

“I started thinking about it during the round, then I said, 'Don’t get ahead of yourself,” said Erskine, a 67-year-old retired PGA Professional from Lake Orion, Mich. “It’s fun to do it. I think it’s a milestone every golfer thinks about when they get into their mid-60s. I think it gets easier as you get older, as long as you stay healthy.”

Erskine, who spent five years on the PGA Tour in the 1970s, leads by two shots over Mike San Filippo (66) and Bill Schumaker (66), who won their age groups in last week’s PGA Quarter Century Championship, and former Champions Tour member James Mason (66). Ed Sabo, Rick Pohle and Jim Sheerin are tied for fifth after 67s on the Ryder Course.

“It’s easy to shoot a round like that when you keep the ball in play and make a bunch of putts,” said Erskine, who missed just two greens.

Walt Chapman of Knoxville, Tenn., shot a 9-under 63 on the Wanamaker Course to lead the 50-59 division by two shots over David Carich of Noblesville, Ind.

Mark Faulkner of Marion, Ill., is tied for third at 66 with Mark Mielke of Palm Beach Gardens and Steve Schneiter of Sandy, Utah.

“My driver was a little crooked, but I hit my irons well and I putted really well,” said Faulkner. “I missed a couple of short ones, but I made most of the ones I needed to make.”

The PGA Winter Championships are presented by Premier Golf and Golf Advisor.
