Fresh off the PGA Professional Championship, Brian Norman and Clint Avara back atop the leaderboard

WOLFE CITY -- Two teaching professionals showed this weekend at Webb Hill Country Club that they're also good golfers.

Clint Avara and Brian Norman rallied from five shots down after Saturday's first round to finish first in the championship flight of the sixth annual Craig Bowers Memorial Golf Tournament. Avara and Norman cut three strokes off Saturday's opening round with a 12-under 60 on Sunday to finish with a 123 total for 36 holes. They overtook the early leaders Larry Woolridge and Tanner Napier (58-66) to win by one stroke.

"Obviously we did not play real well yesterday," Avara said of Saturday's round.

Like all golfers in the first four flights, Avara and Norman endured a lengthy rain delay on Saturday. Their round was supposed to start at 7:30 a.m. but was paused after only two holes because of the storm. They didn't resume playing until 2 p.m.

"We both slept in the car from about 10 to 12:30," said Avara.

Sunday's round went off without any delays.

Avara, who lives in McKinney, is a teaching pro at the Courses at Watters Creek. Norman, who originally is from Kentucky, is a teaching pro at Gleneagles Country Club. Norman played college golf at Southern Illinois.

Norman and Avara recently returned from the 2017 PGA Professional Championship at Sunriver Resort in Oregon. Avara caddied for Norman, who tied for 19th place (73-70-71-76).

"This is my best friend," Norman said of Avara.

Woolridge and Napier, who was Arkansas State's low shooter for the 2017 season, finished alone in second place.

The teams of Joel Wolford and David Brown and Don Williams and Paul Burke tied for third, two strokes back.

Longview golfer Curtis Crabtree and his partner Nicholas Fauster fired a 61 on Sunday to win the first flight by three shots with their total of 128.

Former Greenville Christian School standout athlete Danny Jones and partner Mike Collins won the second flight by two strokes after firing rounds of 65 and 66.

William Strickland Jr. and Patrick Richardson (68-65) captured the third flight by seven strokes with their 133 total.

The fourth through the seventh flights were decided by one 18-hole round on Sunday after Saturday's rounds were called off due to the rain delay.

Proceeds from the event benefit local charities. The tournament is named for former Greenville Lion athlete and coach Craig "Monster" Bowers, who died in a skiing accident in 2012.
