PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (Jan. 6, 2016) – Fellow Floridians Gene Fieger and Mike San Filippo matched 6-under-66s Wednesday to share the first-round lead in the PGA Quarter Century Championship at PGA Golf Club. They are competing in the 64-and-Under division.

Fieger made a birdie at the difficult ninth hole and he added an eagle at the par-5 13th hole when he hit a 4-iron to 12 feet.

“The eagle made a good round into a very good round,” said Fieger, the PGA Teaching Professional at The Club at Pelican Bay in Naples. “But the birdie at the ninth hole is what got me going.”

San Filippo also had a bogey-free round, making six birdies, including three of the four par 5s on the Wanamaker Course.

“I played a nice tidy round of golf,” said San Filippo, who lives in Hobe Sound and teaches at Trump International in West Palm Beach. “It was about as good as I could have done. I didn’t hit it great, but when I missed it, I missed it in the right spot. I was very efficient.”

The pair has been doing this for a while. San Filippo won his first PGA Winter Championship in 1992, Fieger in 1995.

“It’s always fun to play with Gene,” San Filippo said. “He’s tough.”

Craig Stevens and Kirk Hanefield are tied for third after 67s. David Levine and Gary Trivisonno are tied for fifth with 68s.

In the 65-and-Older division, 68-year-old Freddy Gibson of Orlando bettered his age (a 5-under 67) on the Ryder Course and leads three players: Bill Schumaker, Denny Ford and Jim Sheerin. Schumaker was second last year.

Bob Erfurth, at 86 the oldest player in the field, bettered his age by double figures (1-over 73). The Northbrook, Ill., resident is tied for 34th. He has won the PGA Half Century Championship four times.

The 36-hole events, held for those who have been members of the PGA of America for at least 25 years, conclude Thursday.

The PGA Winter Championships are presented by Premier Golf and Golf Advisor.
