Fieger and Vucinich capture titles in PGA Senior Stroke Play Champ'ship

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. – Gene Fieger of Naples, Florida, shot up the leaderboard on the heels of an 8-under par 64, to capture the 59-and-Under Division of the 31st PGA Senior Stroke Play Championship presented by Premier Golf and GOLF ADVISOR.

In the 60-and-Over Division, Roy Vucinich of Moon Township, Pennsylvania, led wire-to-wire, closing with a 3-under-par 69 on the Wanamaker Course at PGA Golf Club, to win his third Senior Stroke Play Championship and fourth Winter Championship overall.

Fieger, 54, carded six birdies, including three straight (Nos. 4, 5 and 6 of the Ryder Course). Yet, the highlight of his round was a 108-yard, hole-out eagle from the 14th fairway. His sand wedge propelled him to a three-stroke victory over Gary Trivisonno of Aurora, Ohio; Sonny Skinner of Slyvester, Georgia; and Brian Cairns of Walled Lake, Michigan.

“That happens once a year, maybe,” Fieger said of his miraculous shot. The PGA Club Manager at Hideout Golf Club, Fieger has played in four PGA Championships and one Senior PGA Championship presented by KitchenAid.  “There are titles that you look back on. I think about how I won the PGA Match Play Championship 20 years ago. Maybe 20 years from now, I’ll think about this win like that, too.”

Second-round leader Mark Anderson of St. Simons Island, Georgia, finished four strokes back, in a tie for fifth. Opening-round leader JC Anderson of O’Fallon, Missouri, finished five strokes behind Fieger.

Vucinich shot 16-under par for the Championship, to beat playing partner Mike San Fillipo of Hobe Sound, Florida, by one stroke.

“Great players come down here to Florida to play each year and when you win, you win against a pretty good field,” said Vucinich, 67, a former Champions Tour player who has competed in the PGA Championship, U.S. Open, Senior PGA Championship, U.S. Senior Open and the Senior British Open.

In a streak for the ages, 85-year-old Bill Erfurth, of Northbrook, Illinois, continued to amaze by shooting 13 strokes below his age. His even-par 72 today is Erfurth’s fifth straight round in the 70s during the PGA Winter Championships. Erfurth, who won the PGA Half Century Championship last week, is cumulatively 58 strokes below his age over his last 90 competitive holes.

“I am in good health,” said Erfurth, a member of the Illinois Golf Hall of Fame. “It’s no problem shooting my age every time I play.  But this is the first time in tournament competition that I have shot five rounds in a row below my age.”

The 31st PGA Senior Stroke Play Championship presented by Premier Golf and GOLF ADVISOR is the second of six PGA Winter Championships conducted at PGA Golf Club during January and February. The Championships will continue with the PGA Senior-Junior Championship, Jan. 28-30.
