2014 National Car Rental Assistant PGA Championship
When: Oct. 30-Nov. 2
Where: PGA Golf Club (Wanamaker Course), Port St. Lucie, Fla.
Defending Champion: Frank Bensel, Purchase, N.Y.
Format: 72 holes of stroke play. Following the first 36 holes, the field will be reduced to the lowest 70 scorers and ties. In the event of a tie for first place after 72 holes, there will be a hole-by-hole playoff.
What's at Stake: $100,000 will be distributed among the 2014 field of 126 competitors. The champion will receive $9,000 and a spot in the 2015 PGA Professional National Championship, set for June 28-July 1.

SUNDAY: Grant Sturgeon wins PGA Assistant Championship with record-setting round
Grant Sturgeon of Mamaroneck, New York, entered the final round in a three-way tie but shot a 7-under par 65 to earn a seven-stroke victory over Kenny Pigman. Sturgeon received $9,000 for the win, and sealed up a spot at next year's PGA Professional National Championship.
Brian Norman of The Colony, Texas, Ben Polland of Manhasset, New York, and Grant Sturgeon of Mamaroneck, New York, are tied for the lead heading into the final round of the 38th National Car Rental PGA Assistant Championship.
Richard Berberian Jr. of Derry, New Hampshire, shot a second consecutive round in the 60s at PGA Golf Club on Friday to grab the halfway lead. At 8-under 136, he's three shots ahead of Brian Norman of The Colony, Texas.
Michael Asbell, PGA Assistant Professional at The Sagamore Club in Noblesville, Indiana, hit the jackpot with a perfect shot on the 205-yard 17th hole on Friday. This is the second straight year someone has made an ace in this event.
Under ideal weather conditions on Thursday at PGA Golf Club, Tony Perla of Villanova, Pa., and Savio Nazareth of Kernersville, N.C., shot matching 65s to lead by two. Five players are tied for third, while defendng champ Frank Bensel is tied for 12th after an opening 69. 
Frank Bensel of Purchase, N.Y., made history, becoming just the second player to win three PGA Assistant Championship titles. Under blustery conditions, Bensel closed with a 69 for a 10-under-par 278 total and a six-stroke victory. Bensel, who previously won in 2010 and 2011, joined Kyle Flinton of Edmond, Okla., who captured the National Championship in 2002, ’03 and ’05.
For the 19th consecutive year, PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla., will host the 2014 National Car Rental PGA Assistant Championship, a national championship for 126 PGA assistant professionals and apprentices. For nearly 40 years, tournament has produced outstanding PGA Professionals who have gone onto successful careers in teaching and administering the game, as well as competing at the highest level. Past competitors or champions include: Loren Roberts (Champion, 1979); Fred Funk (Champion, 1984); Rich Beem (Third, 1998); and Tim Thelen (Champion, 2009).
