Jeffrey Schmid prevails in nine-hole playoff at Event No. 4 of PGA Tournament Series

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (Dec. 11, 2015) – As darkness was setting in on PGA Golf Club, Jeffrey Schmid parred the ninth playoff hole Friday to beat Adam Rainaud and win Event No. 4 of the PGA Tournament Series.

In what's believed to be the longest playoff in Series' history, Schmid hit a pitching wedge from 124 yards to 8 feet and two-putted for par after Rainaud's approach hit the edge of the green but trickled into the hazard. Both players had shot 68s to finish at 8-under 136.

"That was a lot of fun," said Schmid, a teaching pro at Gustin Golf Club in Columbia, Mo. "I've been working on staying in the moment and trying to dig it out as much as I could. I think I showed some grit."

Amazingly, this wasn't Schmid's first nine-hole playoff. He said he beat Gary Rusnak in another nine-hole extra session about 15 years ago when Rusnak hit his approach to 2 feet and Schmid holed his shot.

Friday's playoff had plenty of turns, beginning when Schmid bogeyed the 18th hole of the Wanamaker Course to force the extra session. Rainaud appeared to be in control on the second playoff hole when he was just off the par-5 green in two and Schmid faced a difficult shot over a bunker.

But Schmid hit a nice approach and drained the 20-foot birdie putt to keep the playoff going.

"That's where he won it," said Rainaud, a PGA Assistant Professional at Black Hall Club in Old Lime, Conn. "The odds were in my favor, but he had a really good up-and-down."

Rainaud, who played in his first PGA Championship this year, won the PGA Match Play Championship this spring. He has had three runner-up finishes in the PGA Tournament Series.

Four players tied for third place, a shot back: Peter Ballo (68) of Jupiter. Matt Dobyns (67) of Lake Success, N.Y., Jeff Sorenson (68) of Blaine, Minn., and Jeff Seltzer (70) of Grand Rapids, Mich.

The PGA Tournament Series is presented by Golf Advisor.
