Jim Troy wins Event No. 6 of PGA Tournament Series with late birdie

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (Dec. 18, 2015) – After making seven consecutive pars Friday, Jim Troy knew he needed a birdie if he was going to avoid a playoff.

Troy got that birdie, draining a 10-footer on the 17th hole, to win Event No. 6 of the PGA Tournament Series by a shot over Ben Polland. Troy’s only birdie on the par 5, followed by a clutch up-and-down on the last hole, helped him shoot 3-under 69 and finish at 10-under 134.

“I got word on No. 17 that 9 (under) was low, and I made an awesome birdie putt,” said Tory, a PGA Teaching Professional at Milham Park Golf Club in Michigan. “I exploded a wedge over the green at 18, but I hit a great chip to 2 feet.”

Polland (67) made three consecutive birdies twice in his round and closed with a birdie to make a late run at Troy. Polland won Event No. 2 of the Series, was runner-up to Matt Dobyns in the PGA Professional Championship and also was second to Dobyns in the Series’ money list at $9,515.

“I played really well; I just wish I could have had two putts back early in the round,” said Polland, a PGA Assistant Professional at Deepdale Golf Club in Manhasset, N.Y. “It’s been the best year ever. I got to play in the PGA Championship and the PGA Cup and all of the Club Pro stuff.”

Rod Perry of Port Orange, Fla., fired a 67 and finished tied for third at 136 with first-round leader Jon Mansfield (71).

Dobyns, who won his first OMEGA PGA Professional Player of the Year Award, topped the money list at $9,840. Perry ($8,631) was third and Troy ($8,336) fourth.
