PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (Dec. 17, 2015) – Jon Mansfield practiced what he preached.

The PGA Teaching Professional at Clearwater (Fla.) Country Club, Mansield said he bought a $50 pass this week to work hard on his game at the PGA Center For Golf Learning & Performance. "I haven't done that much practicing in a long time," he said

It paid off Thursday, when he made 10 birdies on the Ryder Course during an 8-under 64 that gave him the first-round lead in Event No. 6 of the PGA Tournament Series at PGA Golf Club. He leads by a shot over Jim Troy of Portage, Mich.

"I struck it very well today, hit a lot of shots to 10 to 15 feet and made those putts," Mansfield said. "My practicing this week was so much the key. The Learning Center is a nice place, good grass, good balls and neat chipping areas."

Troy birdied his first six holes, then bogeyed the next two. He rebounded with three birdies and an eagle at the par-5 13th. He made just six pars.

Troy Pare of Seekonk, Mass., and Event No. 4 winner Brett Melton of Washington, Ind., are tied for third with 66s. Pare was 6-under after 11 holes before "settling" for his 66.

"It was somewhat of a disappointing 66," Pare said. "I tried to get greedy on one hole and paid the price (a bogey after hitting long at No. 12). But anytime I tee it up and shoot 66, I'm a happy camper. We'd all be."

Tied for fifth at 68 were Ben Polland, Frank Bensel and Mark Mielke.
