Rinker-Amaral team tops leaderboard at PGA Senior-Junior Championship

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. – Lee Rinker of nearby Jupiter, Florida, and Colin Amaral of Port St. Lucie, used some home cooking Wednesday to shoot 66 and take the lead after the second round of the 56th  PGA Senior-Junior Championship presented by Premier Golf and GOLF ADVISOR.

Carding seven birdies while starting on the back nine (including three straight on Nos. 12-14  of the Ryder Course), the duo of Rinker-Amaral built upon their opening-round 64 on the adjacent Wanamaker Course to move from a second-place tie into the outright lead by one stroke.

Rinker credited Amaral for getting the team off to a hot start with four birdies on their first five holes, sinking putts of 20, 35, 20 and 12 feet.

“My partner is playing so well,” said Rinker, the PGA Director of Golf at Emerald Dunes Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida. “If I can get my game any better, we have a shot at winning this thing.”

Amaral cited camaraderie as the key to the team’s success. “We played together last year, and our personalities mix well,” said Amaral, a wintertime Florida resident who is a PGA Professional at Metropolis Country Club in White Plains, New York.

Opening-round leaders JC Anderson of O’Fallon, Missouri, and Rod Perry of Port Orange, Florida, shot 69 on the Dye Course and are tied with two other teams for second place: Rick Schuller of Chester, Virginia, and Bob Sowards of Dublin, Ohio; and James Mason of Dillard, Georgia, and Tim Weinhart of Alpharetta, Georgia.

Mason and Weinhart moved up 21 spots on the leaderboard following a 63 on the Dye Course.

Newly elected PGA Secretary Suzy Whaley and teammate Ronny Glanton combined for a 2-under-par 70 on the Wanamaker Course and are tied for 36th.

The PGA Senior-Junior Championship presented by Premier Golf and GOLF ADVISOR features 155 teams of PGA Professionals, with Seniors 50 and over, and Juniors 49 and younger. Teams rotate among the three courses at PGA Golf Club – Wanamaker, Ryder and Dye – during the 72-hole Championship.

Following  the third round on Thursday, the field will be cut to the low 40 teams and ties for the final round on the Wanamaker Course. The estimated total purse is $100,000.
