Anderson and Vucinich lead after Day 2 of PGA Senior Stroke Play C'ship

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. – Mark Anderson of St. Simons Island, Georgia, carried the wind to his advantage to take a one-stroke lead after the second round of the 59-and-Under Division in the PGA Senior Stroke Play Championship presented by Premier Golf and GOLF ADVISOR.

In the 60-and-Over Division, Roy Vucinich of Moon Township, Pennsylvania, rallied around a birdie-birdie-eagle-birdie, four-hole stretch on the Ryder Course to shoot 7-under par and maintain a one-shot lead over Bobby Heins of Purchase, New York. Vucinich is 13-under par for the championship.

The final round for both divisions will be played Thursday.

Vucinich, 67, is a former Champions Tour player who has competed in the PGA Championship, U.S. Open, Senior PGA Championship, U.S. Senior Open and the Senior British Open. He added six birdies to his eagle against just one bogey, as he continued to pace the field. “That span of four holes usually doesn’t happen in the normal course of play,” said the PGA Life Member. “I hit a stretch that made a difference in shooting the really good score that I did.”

Anderson, 54, who started the championship with a double bogey yesterday and rallied for a 69, shot 2-under par 70 today in cooler and windy conditions on the Wanamaker Course. He stands at 5-under par, one stroke ahead of four PGA members, including opening-round leader JC Anderson.

“Today played a lot harder than yesterday, that’s for sure,” said Mark Anderson, who played in the 2014 Senior U.S. Open and is the PGA Teaching Professional at Brunswick (Georgia) Country Club. “I like it when the wind blows, and I’m hoping the wind blows tomorrow, too.”

In an amazing streak, 85-year-old Bill Erfurth, of Northbrook, Illinois, continued to defy the odds by shooting 12 strokes below his age. His 73 today is Erfurth’s fourth straight round in the 70s during the PGA Winter Championships. Erfurth, who won the PGA Half Century Championship last week, is cumulatively 45 strokes below his age over his last 72 competitive holes.

The 31st PGA Senior Stroke Play Championship presented by Premier Golf and GOLF ADVISOR is the second of six PGA Winter Championships conducted at PGA Golf Club during January and February.
