Having a lucky item of clothing is pretty common among athletes, especially when they have to perform in big games or events. But not all superstitious attire is as cool looking as amateur Maverick McNealy's socks.

He tweeted yesterday that he hoped the socks, patterned like Great Britain's flag, would bring him some success at his Open debut.

McNealy's lucky socks seemed to be working as he entered the second round at Royal Birkdale -- he birdied the first hole.

The 21-year-old Stanford graduate is the No. 2 ranked amateur golfer in the world and earned a bid to the Open Championship after winning the Mark H. McCormack Medal. According to Golf Digest, McNealy is still debating on turning pro or going into the business world but will make a final decision next month after the U.S. Amateur.

Maybe his lucky socks will help him get a win.
