Twenty Ryder Cup USA hopefuls and three vice captains attended a dinner at Captain Jim Furyk's Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., Wednesday evening, on the eve of the Players Championship at nearby TPC Sawgrass.

Vice captains Davis Love III, Steve Stricker and Tiger Woods -- still very much trying to play his way onto the team -- were there along with the following players: Dustin Johnson, Gary Woodland, Bryson Dechambeau, Tony Finau, Rickie Fowler, Brian Harman, Charley Hoffman, Billy Horschel, Zach Johnson, Kevin Kisner, Patton Kizzire, Matt Kuchar, Andrew Landry, Phil Mickelson, Scott Piercy, Chez Reavie, Webb Simpson, Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas and Bubba Watson.

In 2016, then-Captain Love did something similar... but with the help of a legend.

During Honda Classic week in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., during March of that year, 18-time major winner Jack Nicklaus allowed Love to host a number of USA hopefuls for a casual dinner and evening at his Palm Beach home.

It certainly could have played a role in what panned out later that year.

The USA won its first Ryder Cup since 2008 two year's ago at Hazeltine National in Chaska, Minn. Later this year, the team will look to win on foreign soil at Le Golf National Paris in France for the first time since 1993 -- the year Spieth, Thomas and DeChambeau were born.

Shortly after Wednesday's get together, PGA.com connected with Furyk to chat about the evening that was.
