Schedule: Thursday-Sunday.

Course: Firestone Country Club, South Course (7,400 yards, par 70).

Purse: $9.25 million. Winner's share: $1.57 million.

 

Last year: Rory McIlroy regained the No. 1 spot in the world, following his Open Championship victory with a two-stroke win. He won the PGA Championship the following week.

 

Last week: Troy Merritt won the Quicken Loans National in Virginia for his first PGA Tour title. Rickie Fowler was second, three strokes back. ... Kiradech Aphibarnrat won the Paul Lawrie Match Play in Scotland, beating Robert Karlsson 1 up.

 

Notes: The PGA Championship is next week at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin. ... Second-ranked Jordan Spieth is making his first start since tying for fourth three weeks ago in the Open. The Masters and U.S. Open champion can take the No. 1 spot in the world from McIlroy with a victory. Spieth has four victories this year, also winning playoffs in the Valspar Championship and John Deere Classic. ... McIlroy is sidelined by a left ankle injury. ... Eight-time champion Tiger Woods failed to qualify.

BARRACUDA CHAMPIONSHIP

Course: Montreux Golf and Country Club (7,472 yards, par 72).

Purse: $3.1 million. Winner's share: $558,000.

 

Last year: Geoff Ogilvy won the modified Stableford event for his first PGA Tour title since 2010. He had a tournament-record 49 points for a five-point victory.

 

Last week: Troy Merritt won the Quicken Loans National in Virginia for his first PGA Tour title. Rickie Fowler was second, three strokes back.

 

Notes: Ogilvy is in the field after failing to qualify for the Bridgestone Invitational. Retief Goosen, Tim Clark and former Stanford player Patrick Rodgers also are playing. ... Under the modified Stableford format, players receive 8 points for double eagle, 5 for eagle, 2 for birdie, 0 for par, minus-1 for bogey and minus-3 for double bogey or worse. ... Jack Nicklaus designed the Montreux course.

Course: Canyon Meadows Golf and Country Club (7,158 yards, par 72).

Purse: $2.35 million. Winner's share: $352,500.

 

Last year: Fred Couples chipped in for eagle for a course-record 9-under 61, then beat Billy Andrade with a tap-in birdie on the first hole of a playoff.

 

Last week: Kenny Perry successfully defended his 3M Championship title in Minnesota, shooting 69-61-68 for a four-stroke victory.

 

Notes: Couples tops the field along with Colin Montgomerie and Miguel Angel Jimenez. ... Rocco Mediate won the inaugural event in 2013 at 22 under, shooting 63-64-64. ... Canadians Stephen Ames, Rick Gibson, Darryl James, Rod Spittle and Jim Rutledge are playing. ... The tour is off next week. Play will resume Aug. 21-23 with the Boeing Classic in Snoqualmie, Washington.

Last year: Zack Sucher won his first Web.com Tour title. He closed with a 72 in windy conditions for a three-stroke victory.

 

Last week: Patton Kizzire won the Utah Championship for first tour title, beating Sung Kang with a birdie on the second hole of a playoff.

 

Notes: Kizzire leads the money list with $391,699 with four events left in the regular season. Peter Malnati is second at $268,499. ... Stuart Appleby is making his second start on the tour following surgery for a herniated disk. The nine-time PGA Tour winner tied for 36th last month in the Nova Scotia Open. ... The Price Cutter Charity Championship is next week in Springfield, Missouri, followed by the News Sentinel Open in Knoxville, Tennessee.

 

LPGA TOUR

Next event: Cambia Portland Classic, Aug. 13-16, Columbia Edgewater Country Club, Portland, Oregon.

 

Last week: Inbee Park rallied to win the Ricoh Women's British Open to become the seventh women to win four different major championships. The top-ranked South Korean player closed with a 7-under 65 at Turnberry for a three-stroke victory.
