PGA Professional Championship unveils its new name

 

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. (Aug. 26, 2015) – Begun in 1968 as an event to showcase the playing talents of grassroots PGA of America members, the PGA Professional Championship has evolved into the largest all-Professional competition in golf.

 

Formerly the PGA Professional National Championship, the 312-player field assembling next June at Turning Stone Resort in Verona, New York, will compete in the newly-titled 49th PGA Professional Championship presented by Club Car, Mercedes-Benz and OMEGA.

 

The PGA Professional Championship field is composed of representatives from 41 nationwide PGA Professional Section Championships conducted in the late summer and fall. The 20 top finishers in the PGA Professional Championship earn berths in the PGA Championship.

 

“From the beginning, the PGA Professional Championship has been about elevating the playing opportunities for our members and providing premier venues where they can display their talents on a national stage,” said PGA President Derek Sprague. “We’re proud of the PGA Professionals who have made an impact upon golf’s growth in this country. The PGA Professional Championship presents an opportunity for members to compete for the Walter Hagen Cup and also earn a berth in a major championship.”

 

The PGA Professional Championship is televised live by Golf Channel, reaching 78 million U.S. homes. The Championship is distribution internationally in Canada, the Caribbean and Latin America, reaching 39 countries and nearly 15 million subscribers.

 

The 49th PGA Professional Championship will be contested June 26-29, 2016, at Turning Stone Resort in Verona, New York. The Championship last visited Turning Stone in 2006.
