PGA Professional of the Year Dobyns shines at Shell Houston Open

Published on

Matt Dobyns has a full-time job as head PGA Professional at Fresh Meadow Country Club in Lake Success, N.Y. But his recent run of starts on the PGA Tour have kept him busier than normal during what normally is a quiet late winter and early spring.

Dobyns continued his on-course success last week at the Shell Houston Open, where he put together rounds of 69 and 74 to make it to the weekend. Unfortunately, a third-round 78 left Dobyns without a chance to play Sunday, as he fell victim to the 54-hole cut when more than 78 players remain in the field after two days of play.

2015 PGA PROFESSIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP: Complete coverage

Still, the 2015 PGA Professional Player of the Year has got to be enjoying everything that's come his way since winning the PGA Professional Championship at Philadelphia Cricket Club last summer. That earned him a berth in the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits. He then went on to win the Metropolitan Section's PGA Championship in a sudden-death playoff.

And so far in the 2015-16 PGA Tour season, Dobyn has had the opportunity to play in four events, beginning with the Sanderson Farms Championship in November. He's also played in the Northern Trust Open and Puerto Rico Open.

PGA PROFESSIONAL PLAYERS OF THE YEAR: Dobyns, Cairns honored

Thursday's opening round was picture perfect for Dobyns. He birdied the fourth, eighth and 13th holes and negotiated the rest of the holes at the Golf Club of Houston without a bogey for a 3-under 69, putting him among the upper half of the leaderboard.

He ran into trouble for the first time on Friday, making three consecutive bogeys on the front nine en route to a 37, then matched that score on the back for a second-round 74. Still, that was good enough to get Dobyns to the weekend.

Next on his Tour to-do list: The Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow in early May.
