Pinehurst Resort hosts 5th Annual Nextgengolf City Tour Championship on Labor Day Weekend

BOSTON — The Nextgengolf City Tour Championship will be held at Pinehurst (N.C.) Resort, Aug. 30-Sept. 1, as the nation’s top players from local qualifiers compete to be crowned champions. This invitation-only event will be made up of 208 men and women representing 23 different cities.

The Nextgengolf City Tour runs team-based golf tournaments for amateur golfers 21 and older in major cities. With team best-ball and team-scramble options, the City Tour provides the opportunity for adults of all skill levels to compete locally and nationally.

This year marks the 5th anniversary of the City Tour Championship. Last year’s championship hosted 130 players. Weapons of Grass Destruction, of Atlanta, took home the scramble title, while Dirty Mike and the Boys, of Raleigh, N.C., secured the best ball title. Teams are made up of friends, alumni and even corporate-sponsored individuals.

The City Tour Championship was formed in 2014, when New York edged out Boston to win the inaugural event. The following year, Nextgengolf expanded nationwide. Since then, the championship has been held at: Cog Hill Golf & Country Club (2015), Seaview Golf Club (2016), True Blue & Caledonia (2017) and TPC New Orleans (2018).

Pinehurst Resort is steeped in tradition and has hosted some of golf’s greatest tournaments, including the PGA Championship, Ryder Cup, U.S. Open, Women’s U.S. Open and U.S. Amateur. Along with playing two of Pinehurst’s championship courses (No. 6 and No. 8), tournament participants will have the opportunity to compete in a Cleveland Golf-sponsored Par 3 challenge on The Cradle course; a chipping competition; and a “Rock the Cradle” concert sponsored by Chippo. A limited number of participants also will have the opportunity to play Pinehurst No. 2 on the Monday following the event.

“What sets the City Tour apart from other tournament series is our team-based approach to golf, which really breeds a great sense of community,” says Michael Devlin, City Tour Lead at Nextgengolf. “Our championship is particularly special, because it brings in golfers from across the U.S. for a national experience. We’re very excited to be bringing this unique event to the famed Pinehurst Resort.”

Nextgengolf City Tour teams are made up of four-to-six players who play in pairs. The top two best-ball or scramble pair scores calculate the team score. Average differential (course difficulty) is used for rankings, since players compete on different courses nationally.
