'Prelude to Season's Final Major' to air on Sunday, Aug. 7, on CBS Sports

The 93rd PGA Championship will be in the spotlight as CBS Sports broadcasts “Prelude to The Season’s Final Major” this Sunday, Aug. 7, from  1:00-2:00 p.m. EDT.

The one-hour special, hosted by CBS Sports announcer Bill Macatee, kicks off the week’s coverage for the 93rd PGA Championship, which will be contested Aug. 11-14 at historic Atlanta Athletic Club, in Johns Creek, Ga.  The club is the home of Bobby Jones and will serve as host to the PGA Championship for the third time, as the strongest field in golf gathers again for “the Season’s Final Major.”

Last year’s pulsating finish at Whistling Straits will be highlighted, as Martin Kaymer became the first German ever to win the PGA Championship in a three-hole aggregate score playoff over American Bubba Watson.

The broadcast will showcase some of the most dramatic moments in PGA Championship history, including: the 20th anniversary of John Daly’s improbable run from ninth alternate to PGA Champion at the 73rd PGA Championship at Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, Ind.; the 25th anniversary of Bob Tway’s miraculous hole-out birdie on the 72nd hole to earn the Wanamaker Trophy at Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio;  the 30th Anniversary of hometown hero Larry Nelson, the 2011 PGA Distinguished Award winner, capturing the 63rd PGA Championship at the Atlanta Athletic Club; and a look back to the 83rd PGA Championship, also held at the Atlanta Athletic Club in 2001, when David Toms parlayed a 243-yard hole-in-one on the 15th hole during the third round into his own chapter in PGA Championship lore.

The program also highlights last June’s PGA Professional National Championship, at Hershey (Pa.) Country Club, with Champion David Hutsell, PGA director of instruction at The Elkridge Club in Baltimore, leading a group of 20 PGA club professionals who earned a berth in the 2011 PGA Championship.

A round-table discussion during the show features members of the CBS Sports golf team, including Jim Nantz, Sir Nick Faldo, David Feherty, Ian Baker-Finch and Peter Kostis. The panel of experts will unveil who they believe has the best chance of becoming PGA Champion in 2011.
