Schneiter and Erskine lead after Day 2 at PGA Senior Stroke Play C'ship

 

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. – It took Steve Schneiter 33 holes before he made his first bogey Wednesday in the PGA Senior Stroke Play Championship.

 

So what does he do next? Finish with three birdies for an 8-under 64 to take a one-shot lead in the 50-59 age group into Thursday’s final round at PGA Golf Club.

 

“That was big because it could have gone the other way just as easily,” Schneiter, a Sandy, Utah resident who has qualified for 12 PGA Championships, said of the late birdies. “I just hung in there and didn’t let the bogey get to me.”

 

Schneiter is at 14-under 130 after 36 holes, which is some of the best golf of his career. Yet all it gives him is just the one-shot lead over Walt Chapman of Knoxville, Tenn. As luck would have it, the two played together the first two days, and they’ll be paired again Thursday.

 

“We’ve kind of fed off each other the last two days,” Schneiter said. “He’s played great the last two days and I expect he will play well tomorrow.”

 

Chapman, who led after a 63, opened with a bogey Wednesday, but made birdies on four of his next five holes. He’s at 13-under after the 69 – but one back.

 

“I guess that’s the good news and the bad news,” Chapman said of his position and score. “I’m obviously playing well, but it’s going to take another good round tomorrow to catch Steve.”

 

There’s a gap of five shots to the next player, David Carich (71) of Noblesville, Ind.

 

Randy Erskine of Lake Orion, Mich., shot a 66 and also reached 14-under to lead the 60-and-older division. Erskine had an early bogey, but rebounded with seven birdies to take a two-shot lead over Mike San Filippo (66) of Hobe Sound.

 

“I didn’t hit it as close as yesterday, but I figured anything in the 60s would be good,” said Erskine, who last won a PGA Winter Championship event in 2009. “I’d take another round in the 60s and take my chances. You can’t stop what others are doing.”

 

San Filippo won his age group in last week’s PGA Quarter Century Championships. Former Champions Tour winner James Mason (68) is four back.
