Beginners Basics Lesson or Full Swing Evaluation Lesson
Beginners Basics Lesson or Full Swing Evaluation Lesson

Generally, for individual instruction, we start with a 75 to 90 minute golf swing evaluation lesson (if you are already a golfer!) or if you are just getting into the game this lesson is a Golf Set-Up and Swing Fundamentals Lesson. The swing fundamentals lesson covers grip, stance, posture, alignment, set-up and the basic motion of the golf swing. While the first lesson varies in length of time, the special is that I only charge you for a 60 minute lesson! THIS IS THE BEST LESSON YOU WILL EVER TAKE! Here is a quick overview of what it entails….The first 10 to 15 minutes we are going to sit down and talk about your golf history, athletic history, any medical issues or range of motion issues you have that we may have to address and work around. I will have a few questions for you regarding what your goals are with the game, where do you want to be in 6 months, how much time do you have to put towards practice to reach those goals et.al. This time is important for me to get to know you and for you to get to know me as well. If you have any questions or concerns, we will address those at that time too. In the Swing Evaluation Lesson, we will create a game plan or road map for you to improve your game which will enable you to reach your shorter term goals for the game of golf. Throughout the course of the 75 to 90 minutes, we will evaluate your swing from start to finish, breaking it down to the point that you understand the basics of WHAT needs to be addressed and changed to improve and become more consistent, as well as the WHY these changes that have to happen. Understanding the WHY is important\_, I am a firm believer that if I tell you that you have to work on a specific movement/drill, when you understand the WHY behind it, you are then much more apt to put the time, energy and effort into achieving that task.\_ We will then correct any initial issues, with setup and address, grip, posture etc. Rarely have I ever had someone that didn’t need an adjustment or 2 or 10 at address to create a solid foundation that puts you in the best position to be able to make a swing free from the variables that lead to inconsistancy. You will have a mental checklist to go over everytime you set up to the ball. Then we work on the basic motion of the backswing. I always include Golf Drills, that are given to help you with your specific issues, with any lesson. The best part about the drills is that you can do them anywhere! You don’t have to be at the course or the range to do your drills practice. When the lesson is finished you will have an understanding of your swing and a clear idea of what to work on for improvement. At that time, based on you goals, we will put together a game plan on what it will take, including the type and number of lessons that will be needed to get you to your goals (with the provision that you will practice and put time and energy into improvement in between lessons) How much time and energy you can dedicate to practice will play a big part in how much time we need to allow for the game plan to work and get you to where you want to be. The cost of the initial 1 hour plus lesson is $195 and if a package of lessons is purchased, the cost is discounted and if the $195 has been pre-paid it is subtracted from the price of the package. Please feel free to contact me to set up your initial lesson or if you have any additional questions. Here are some of the common questions ane here are some answers….. Q: How important is the first lesson and should I be nervous? A: The first lesson is of critical importance to the development of a productive relationship between the instructor and the student. I want to take some time at the start of the lesson to get to know who you are as a person and as a golfer, which will include finding out the following information…. 1\) What do you want from your golf game (i.e., Qualify for the school team? Qualify or win a particular tournament? Bring your handicap down to a certain number? Beat your buddies? etc.)? 2.) What's keeping you from realizing your goals (i.e., more distance, a better short game, more consistency, better course management, etc.)? 3.) What do you need to change to achieve your goals (i.e., better physical conditioning, more practice, more rounds of golf, better focus on the course, a more productive practice plan, professional instruction, etc.)? 4.) Are you willing to do the things that are necessary to change (i.e., Can you find more time to practice/play? Do you need more properly fit equipment? Do you need a better practice environment and practice plan? etc.)? As far as nerves go, absolutely not! You shouldn’t be nervous to take a lesson, here’s why…..we will start off the 75 to 90-minute lesson by sitting down and talking and taking enough time to get to know you. Often an instructor may see potential in you as a golfer that you didn’t know you even had! If you come for a first lesson and you’re feeling inadequate or guilty because you aren’t big on practice, as your coach I will relieve you of that guilt. Even if you can’t manage much range time between lessons, we can help you get better. It’s what I do. My job as a coach is to get results, without telling a student they need to be constantly stretching or doing yoga or beating balls all day. So relax and enjoy the time during your lessons. Q: What do I have to do to prepare for the first lesson? A: In general, I will want to know where you’ve been as a golfer and where you feel you want to go. You may have played golf for three years or for 30 years—I will want to know that. If you’ve had an injury or a surgery or there’s a medical issue that affects movement, we can and sometimes have to take that into account and work around that issue. Have you played other sports in your life? What level did you play them at? What are your goals? What would you like to do or accomplish with Golf. What is the reason you play? The best way to prepare is to reflect on your experiences and your patterns out on the course and be able to describe them. That includes situations that make you nervous, particular shots that psych you out, that sort of thing. This information helps me to assist you in formulating goals and in mapping out a game plan to getting to those goals. Q: How do you go about instructing a golfer when everyone is different? A: In order to communicate at the highest level I will want to determine how you best learn. Are you a verbal, visual or feel learner? How much information will work best with you? Do you need to be fed with a teaspoon or a snow shovel? What kind of feedback are you most likely to respond to, positive or negative? Some players need a pat on the back, others need a kick in the pants and some need both. I need to learn how you learn and your feedback and information helps me do that and then impart the right information at the right time and in the right manner that is best for you to learn. You may have additional questions, if you do, please reach out to me at chris@xgolfccommack.com and I will be happy to answer any questions. Regards, Christopher A. Hicks, PGA, CPI.
